"Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is advancing implementation of the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM), motivated by recent legislative requirements under the amended Fisheries Act and international commitments such as the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. A central tool supporting this transition is the development of Ecosystem Summaries, which are concise, routinely updated syntheses of environmental and ecological conditions relevant to fisheries assessments and management. This framework establishes the scientific foundation, indicators, and methodological approach for producing an Ecosystem Summary for the midshore and offshore (hereafter, simply “offshore”) waters of the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence (EGSL). The framework placed particular emphasis on identifying indicators that are ecologically meaningful, broadly relevant to multiple harvested stocks, and supported by sufficiently long, reliable time series to allow consistent annual updates"--Abstract, page v.
