Potential mechanisms behind changing survey catchability in 4RSw Atlantic herring / Ève Rioux, Kim Émond, Caroline Lehoux, Elisabeth Van Beveren.: Fs70-5/2026-064E-PDF
"This document aims to explore possible physiological and environmental mechanisms and to identify covariates linked to an apparent shift in catchability of herring in 4RSw. We first established the evidence for a delayed fall migration based on landing records and fish telemetry data, showing a 30–60 days temporal mismatch between the median fall acoustic survey date and the date of 50% cumulative landings in 4Rbc from 1991–2022. This shift was not tied to the timing of fall herring spawning. Rather, a delay in landings was associated with lower herring body condition in the fall, suggesting changes in feeding conditions prior to migration into the survey area. Habitat suitability maps suggested that environmental changes do not constrain herring migration into the survey area, but have become increasingly favourable in northern, unsurveyed waters"--Abstract, page iv.
