This paper focuses on the characteristics of firms that are innovators. It examines six factors that contribute to innovative activity in the Canadian manufacturing sector: (1) intellectual property right protection (2) R&D (3) competencies in marketing, human resources, technology and production (4) firm size and competition (5) nationality of the firm, and (6) an industry's environment or the scientific infrastructure. The authors describe the differences between a product innovation and a process innovation and present their conclusions on protecting innovation and the prerequisites for innovation.
