Great Lakes surface water temperature climatology / by G. J. Irbe. : En57-7/43

Climatology Series No. 43. By G. J. Irbe. This century has seen rapid growth in population, industry and economic activity in the Great Lakes region. As a result of this growth, requirements for basic knowledge about these valuable water resources have arisen. The objective of the study was to determine the normal structure of the Great Lakes surface water temperature field and the normal variability throughout the year. Data were collected from 1966 to 1988 (inclusive) on all four of the Canadian Great Lakes as well as Georgian Bay. The information is presented in the form of either tables and graphs of the normal daily water temperature and variability, or beginning of the month and middle of the month temperature and variability maps. In order to further acquaint the reader with the fundamentals of a rather complex science, this publication presents a generalized summary of the interactive physical processes that determine the Great Lakes surface water temperature regimes, the methods that were used to compute the water temperature means and standard deviations and also the manner in which the results should be interpreted. It is hoped that this report will provide useful information for environmental studies and also serve as a general reference on Great Lakes water temperatures. Maps, references, tables.
