Career handbook : MP53-25/5-1996E

Cover image

As a complement to the widely recognized National Occupational Classification (NOC) system, the NOC Career Handbook is designed specifically for counsellors. Each occupational group in this Handbook is rated on several descriptor scales. These include aptitudes, interests, worker functions, physical activities, environmental conditions, and education/training indicators. This information provides the link between occupations and the characteristics of workers, and can greatly assist counsellors providing a career planning service. NOC is a comprehensive system that classifies and describes occupations in the Canadian labour market. Used by government and the private sector alike, it forms the basis of systems and programs in areas such as human resource planning, labour market research, career planning and counselling, immigration, employment equity, the assessment of training needs, employment insurance and statistics.

  • "The Career handbook is intended only for career counselling and exploration purposes."--Page 3. "The structure of the Career handbook is identical to that of the NOC [National Occupational Classification] with one modification. In many cases, the NOC Unit Group has subgroup descriptions of Main Duties. To help users more easily identify the differences between subgroups, the Career handbook provides a unique occupational profile for each subgroup and identifies it with a digit after a decimal point."--Page 2.
