5203 |aDescribes all fishes known to occur in the Canadian Atlantic, from Cape Chidley on the northernmost tip of Labrador. Special emphasis is given to species of economic importance. Those species, plus all species of special scientific interest and species that occur commonly in the region, are illustrated. All are described in detail under the following headings: habitat, reproduction, growth, food, predation and competition, parasites and disease, distribution, relation to man (including economic importance), and common names (including those in local use). The text includes a review of management and research changes since the 1960s, and an overview of the oceanography of Canadian Atlantic and neighbouring waters. A checklist and keys for identification are provided, along with a comprehensive glossary, a species index to common and scientific names, and a list of some 2500 references cited. In addition to species illustrations, there are 39 distribution maps for commercial fishes and fishes of special interest, plus 23 full-color illustrations. This work replaces "Fishes of the Atlantic Coast of Canada" (A.H. Leim and W.B. Scott, 1966) as the authoritative reference in its field. It will be invaluable to all involved in the fisheries resource and its allied studies.
