5203 |aConsider the challenge of keeping track of the half million artifacts in the historical collections of the Canadian Parks Service. No easy job until it automated and developed a standard, bilingual tool to identify and catalogue each and every one in its 114 historic sites. This system, based on R.G. Chenhall's classification system, is now available to museums and researchers. The reference book is divided into three parts: the classification system and how it works, definitions of categories, classes and subclasses such as furnishings and communications artifacts and finally, a thesaurus of over 6,000 keywords drawn from cataloguing records. To complement this nomenclature, the Canadian Parks Service will soon publish a bilingual visual dictionary, illustrating artifacts according to category and class.
