Residential intensification case studies : municipal initiatives / Prepared by Ray Tomalty. : NH15-414/2004E
These 12 case studies profile municipalities across Canada that have successfully undertaken residential intensification. “Residential intensification” means encouraging housing development in urban areas where infrastructure and transit services are in place. Although an attractive alternative to urban sprawl, residential intensification faces several obstacles, including higher development costs, neighbourhood opposition, and regulatory issues. The municipalities highlighted have overcome such obstacles, either by removing barriers or providing incentives.
