Assessment of Newfoundland and Labrador snow crab . : Fs70-6/2015-029E-PDF

Total landings have remained at 50,000-53,000 t since 2007. However, Divs. 3LNO have accounted for a steadily increasing percentage in recent years, from about half in 2009 to 70% in 2014. The overall exploitable biomass has recently declined. Divs. 3LNO now account for most of the biomass. Overall, recruitment has declined in recent years and is expected to decline further in the short term (2-3 years). Recruitment may improve soon thereafter. The emergence of a pulse of small crabs, associated with cooling oceanographic conditions in the past three years, suggest a modest increase in recruitment within some NAFO Divisions in about 6 to 8 years. However, a warm oceanographic regime suggests weak recruitment in the longer term.
