520 |aThis document summarizes scientific information used to determine the status of the cod stock in NAFO Subdivision 3Ps off the south coast of Newfoundland on 1 January 1999 and evaluates alternative TAC options for 1999. The current population biomass is estimated to be 250,000 t and the spawner biomass is estimated to be 145,000 t. The increase in spawning stock in recent years is due to the growth, maturation and good survival of the 1989 and 1990 year classes over the moratorium period, a strong 1992 year class, as well as reduction in age at maturity. Mixing of northern Gulf (3Pn, 4RS) cod with 3Ps cod in the Burego Bank-Hermitage Channel area of 3Ps during winter continues to present problems. This area was closed to directed cod fishing in the winter of 1998-1999; significant landings from this area during winter could have detrimental effects on the recovery of the neighbouring 3Pn, 4RS stock.
