The status (1960-1997) of alewife and blueback herring stocks in the Scotia-Fundy area as indicated by catch-effort statistics / B.M. Jessup. : Fs70-1/1999-117E-PDF
Alewives (Alosa pseudoharengus) and blueback herring (A. aestivalis), jointly and commonly termed gaspereau, river herring, or alewives, support important commercial fisheries in the former Scotia-Fundy Region, hereafter named the Scotia-Fundy area. Biological and catch-effort information is insufficient to evaluate the status of more than a few stocks of alewives and blueback herring. This paper examines the status, from 1960 to 1997, of alewife and blueback herring stocks (hereafter termed alewives unless specifically differentiated) in Scotia-Fundy area based on fisheries landings, licenses issued, and logbook-reported catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE). Catch and CPUE trends are presumed indicative of relative abundance.
