Interim report on the main estimates 2016-17 / chair, Larry Smith ; deputy chair, Larry Campbell. : YC13-0/421-4E-PDF

The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance has an important role to play on behalf of Parliament and Canadians in ensuring that the government’s spending plans are reasonable, take into account value-for-money, and will be effective in achieving the government’s objectives. In order to fulfill this role, the Committee closely examines and presents reports on the government’s spending plans that are provided to Parliament for its approval. In Main Estimates 2016–17, which was tabled in the Senate on 23 February 2016, the government is requesting Parliament authorize $89.9 billion in spending, as well as forecasting its statutory spending to be $160.3 billion, for overall budgetary expenditures of $250.1 billion in fiscal year 2016–2017. In order to review these estimates, the Committee held five meetings with officials from 12 departments and agencies. The Committee noted and has decided to report on key issues during its meetings.
