520 |aData for this report are collected from the Police Administration Annual Survey and the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Survey, conducted by the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics (CCJS). These two surveys are the main vehicles for collection and reporting of crime and police resources in Canada, and have been in operation since 1962. The purpose of the Police Administration Annual Survey is to collect personnel and operating expenditures for all police forces in Canada. The purpose of the UCR Survey is to count and describe those criminal incidents which are reported to or become known by the police. Although the surveys collect information from all police forces in Canada, this report contains summary information only on Canada's municipal police forces which employ 64% of all police officers in Canada and provide policing services to 22.7 million Canadians (76% of the Canadian population). The definition of municipal policing includes contract policing provided by provincial police forces and the RCMP. It should be noted that counts of crime within a given police force exclude offences investigated by federal RCMP personnel. The report is organized by province. Within each province, municipal police forces are grouped into one of five population ranges and the municipalities within each group are listed alphabetically. The RCMP municipal police forces are separated by a line from the other municipal police services and then arranged alphabetically within the five population ranges.
