DRDC Ottawa has been developing and maintaining the Probabalistic Risk Assessment Tool software for the assessment of risk related to radiological dispersal devices since 2002. Major revision work on the tool started in 2009 and has recently been completed. The revisions introduce several new features such as a new, faster database format, and new graphical user interfaces. These new features required the replacement of older libraries and re-coding of large portions of the software. The changes make the revised tool highly efficient in computation, less dependent on third-party libraries and more manageable for the analysis and presentation of risk results. The new tabular and graphic displays provide effective means for conveying the assessment results, identifying dominant risk contributors and helping to strengthen risk management practices. Examples of how the tool can be used are given to demonstrate the new features, improved performance and new capabilities. The revised tool is currently at the alpha version of the development stage so various tests and checks are ongoing.
