Oil sheen formation and fate in an open sea environment / Thomas L. King ... [et al.]. : Fs97-6/3178E-PDF

"Sea surface oil sheen samples were collected in the vicinity of an offshore oil production platform located on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, Canada during an oceanographic expedition to assess the potential environmental impacts of production water discharges. Detailed chemical analyses showed oil droplets within the discharge stream from the production platform to be the source of petroleum hydrocarbons within surface-oil sheen samples. To improve our understanding of sheen production from the release of produced water discharges, a number of experiments were conducted in a meso-scale wave tank capable of simulating sea-state conditions. A high pressure subsurface release of crude oil was used to generate surface sheens, which were largely formed following the ascent of large (>100 μm) oil droplets. The oil associated with the droplets was found to be physically weathered prior to the formation of surface sheens. A biodegradation study conducted using sheen samples collected from the wave tank found that >80% of the hydrocarbons had been degraded over a 28 day period"-abstract.
