"The Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) Program of the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB) provides a limited range of medically necessary goods and services not provided through private insurance plans, provincial/territorial health or social programs, or other publicly funded programs to registered First Nations and recognized Inuit (FN/I), regardless or income or place of residence in Canada. NIHB benefits include: prescription and certain over-the-counter drugs, medical supplies and equipment, transportation to access medically necessary services, dental care, vision care and short-term crisis intervention mental health counselling. Health Canada and its predecessor department (National Health and Welfare) has administered the NIHB Program since 1945. The program logic is based on health policy objectives that aim to reduce the disparity in health status between FN/I and the general Canadian population. ..."--P.3.
