"The relationship between the Crown and Aboriginal people in Canada is one which has been in near constant evolution since it was first established over 300 years ago. It has been impacted by commercial and economic pressures, by shifting alliances and external threats, as well as by policies of protection and subordination. Initially created to manage the military alliances, the Indian Department has been transformed over time into the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs, managing not only Canada’s relationship with First Nations, the Inuit and Métis, but also all of Canada’s North.
