Good practices in community engagement and readiness : compendium of case studies from Canada's minerals and metals sector. : M34-21/2016E-PDF
"The level of a community’s readiness for mineral development depends on many contributing factors, including, but not limited to, skills and educational attainment, access to capital and business partnerships, business and financial literacy, physical infrastructure, and community well-being. As well, governments and communities have to plan for the social and environmental requirements and oversight needed once mining operations see fruition. This may include strengthening health services, local infrastructure, housing, security and policing, and educational and medical services.Improving community engagement and readiness is therefore one of the key elements in maximizing the local benefits of activities related to mineral development. Consequently, in 2014 the federal, provincial, and territorial governments, through the Intergovernmental Working Group on the Mineral Industry, produced the first edition of the Compendium of Case Studies to highlight good practices in community engagement and readiness. The Compendium was developed in consultation with an external multistakeholder advisory committee (EAC) composed of a number of representatives from academia, industry and Indigenous organizations. This second edition builds on this work by incorporating additional case studies from industry, communities and Indigenous organizations. An EAC was also consulted in the development of this addition”--Introd., p. 1.
