520 |aThe marine international database is based on Canada Customs cargo control documents (A6 General Declaration). This document is filed by the carrier at the port where cargo is loaded or unloaded from a vessel. The form contains information on cargo movements, including the cargo loaded or unloaded and vessel characteristics. In this study, three elements of that database are used: the Canadian handling port, the foreign origin/destination port, and the vessel flag. The intensity and diversity of activity at Canadian ports is indicated by the total cargo that they handle, as well as by the range and degree of fleets' and foreign regions' representation in their markets.
