Frameworking fruit trees / by R.J. Hilton. : A12-8/136-1946E-PDF

"Frameworking is the practice of grafting or budding in such a way that most of the original framework of the tree is retained, only branch ends, small or poorly placed laterals, spurs and surplus larger branches being removed. ... Frameworking may be accomplished either by grafting or budding, but the budding is slower to do and slower to replace the top, than grafting. Hence, framework-budding is not recommended for any but peach and apricot trees, which do not graft readily. A brief review of experimental results comparing topworking with frameworking will be found later in this bulletin."--p. 7.
