5203 |a"This report collects all available plankton community data for the Niagara River Area of Concern (AOC) designated requires further assessment for the Beneficial Use Impairment (BUI 13): “degradation of phytoplankton and zooplankton populations”. The Niagara River connecting channel, though it joins well-studied Lake Erie and Lake Ontario is data-poor, with no active plankton sampling programs. A single season of sampling in 2014 took place monthly from June-Oct for water quality, zooplankton and phytoplankton composition and density. Oligotrophic conditions persisted throughout the season and plankton densities were extremely low, though this was expected in a high-flow system such as the Niagara River. The residence time for plankton in the Niagara River is only 11-28 hours, but could be much longer if plankton are entrained in the hydroelectric reservoirs. Given the results of this survey, no impairment of plankton populations is indicated"--Abstract, p. iv.
