"The identification of oat varieties has long been a complex problem with agronomists and others interested in the study of oats and many attempts have been made, especially by non-Canadians, to classify and describe them. Unfortunately, none of these systems of classification or methods of descriptionis entirely applicable to varieties grown in Canada where their response to environment is peculiarly Canadian in character. Obviously a study of the nature and extent of this response must precede any serious attempt to construct a satisfactory classification here or elsewhere. Such a study was begun by the author in 1927 with over thirty varieties, actual descriptions however being limited to those varieties which thus far have been accepted for registration in Canada by the Canadian Seed Growers' Association. ... The descriptions herein given follow closely the plan outlined by the Committee on Norms of the C.S.G.A. They have also been reviewed by the institutions responsible for the introduction of the varieties with which this deals"--Introd., p. 3.
