Distribution and abundance of benthic habitats within the Sambro Ledges Ecologically and Biologically Significant Area / by K. Filbee-Dexter. : Fs97-6/3190E-PDF
"This report summarizes the distribution and abundance of benthic habitats and associated communities within the bounds of the Sambro Ledges Ecologically and Biologically Significant Area (EBSA). The area was surveyed using video transects, drop camera observations and dive surveys. Observations were classified into benthic habitats and, when possible, mapped. Dominant benthic habitats in this region include: infralittoral rock reefs dominated by large macroalgae (kelp beds); deep circalittoral reefs dominated by mixed faunal communities, including tunicates fields, sponges, corals and bryozoans; and sedimentary habitats dominated by echinoderms. The Sambro Ledges EBSA containes diverse benthic features and productive habitats, likely due to the many high energy and structural complex rocky reefs, shoals and ledges within the area. Combining field observations with predictive spatial models was an effective way to obtain spatially comprehensive benthic data that can be used in marine protected area (MPA) design, and this approach could be applied to other areas of conservation interest within the Scotian Shelf Bioregion”--Abstract, p. iv.
