The Canadian family : a study based on the Census of 1931 and supplementary data / by A.J. Pelletier, F.D. Thompson, A. Rochon. : CS98-1931CM-7E-PDF
"This monograph is a statistical survey of the Canadian family, past and present, through the medium of data available from censuses since 1666. The family attribute most capable of measurement is size, i.e., the number of persons living at home at the time of the census. The household includes all the inmates of the home, while the private family includes only the immediate dependents of the head. While no marked trend in average household size is evident prior to 1871, the period since then has witnessed a steady decline in every region except rural Quebec. ... The monograph is divided into two parts. Part I consists of an historical survey from 1608 and an analysis of data available from the 1931 Census; Part II contains relevant tabular matter"--Pref., p. 3..
