"Improper disposal of sewage may create both health and environmental problems. Typhoid fever, paratyphoid fever, dysentery and viral diseases are some of the health hazards that may be present in sewage. The nutrients in sewage, such as phosphorous and nitrogen will promote accelerated growth of aquatic plants and algae in lakes and streams. Nitrogen may also accumulate in the ground water to such an extent that the water may be unfit for consumption"--Introduction, p. 1.
