"This monograph is devoted to an analysis of the labour force behaviour of Canadian wives, since married women are the most controversial and rapidly changing component of the female labour force. We examine characteristics of wives and their families. We study the communities in which they live, since area of residence appears to be related to whether or not a wife is in the labour force, and to the determination of the annual hours of work, as well as hourly wage rates of those who do work. We also try to briefly assess some of the effects of the labour force behavior of married women on children, the family income distribution in Canada, and the ownership of houses and other durable goods. ..."--Pref.
