"In this study, we have attempted to analyse a variety of language characteristics of the Canadian population, using the data in the 1971 Census of Populatlon as our source of information. We have tried to restrict ourselves to those analyses where the various language characteristics are dependent variables, and have deliberately excluded from the study all analyses in which language characteristics were either independent or intervening variables. Thus, the reader will find analyses of the relationship between education and bilingualism; the reader will not find analyses of the relationship between bilingualism and income. ..."--Pref.
