""Lands reserved for the Indians" have a special place in the distribution of legislative powers within our federal system; the phrase describes a class of subjects over which the legislative power of Parliament is exclusive. This does not mean, however, that provincial laws have no application within the borders of Indian reserves. Indians living on reserves have always had the provincial laws of tort and contract, for example, available to them except as Parliament has from time to time modified or abrogated these"--Introduction, p.
