"The material for this report was collected at Aklavik during the summer of 1961, when I was employed under contract by the Northern Co-ordination and Research Centre of the Department of Northern Affairs and National Resources to make a sociological study of the use of alcoholic beverages by Indians and Eskimos in that area. The final report of the study will be completed in 1962. What follows is a summary of several chapters of the final report, which was prepared at the request of Mr. V. F. Valentine of the Northern Co-ordination and Research Centre for presentation by Professor F. Vallee at the February 7th meeting of the special Department of Northern Affairs and National Resources committee investigating social adjustment problems inthe north."--Introduction.
