"The area of western Nova Scotia that bounds Kejimkujik Lake has been inhabited by a great diversity of peoples. Beginning with the initial settlement by the Micmacs, various ethnic groups including the French, English, Scottish and Irish have lived in the area at one time or another. The settlers utilizing the natural resources of the area survived by fishing, farming, lumbering, mining and more recently,engaging in the tourist trade. As the mid-20th century approached, the communities in the area had, by self-initiative and adaptation, maintained a distinctive and deep-rooted culture that continued to sustain their life-style"--Abstract, p. 4.
