Such adaptive teaching requires an economical but valid assessment of that potential. For pupils from middle-class urban cultures reasonably valid instruments such as the highly verbal Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales or the conventional group intelligence tests derived there from are available for this purpose. But how can a teacher gain a valid picture of the general intellectual capability of an immigrant, a slum child, an Indian or Metis, to assist in diagnosing his difficulties in reading or number, and in applying teaching techniques appropriately adapted to that capability?
