"In planning research to improve methods of rock breakage one of the most difficult problems is that of deciding which of the almost endless aspects one should tackle first. In an effort to assist such a decision a critical review is offered of past results in both fundamental research and practical applications. Excavation, as well as crushing and grinding, is covered. Certain areas which seem to represent appropriate points of departure in a continuing search for improved methods of rock breakage are suggested as being worthy of investigation both at the fundamental and applied levels"--Synopsis, p. 105.
