"The normal analysis file structure of one fixed length record per respondent does not represent the most efficient data model for the analysis file for Cycle 3 of the General Social Survey. This is because the amount of data collected for a respondent depends on the number of crime and accident incident reports that have been completed. After reviewing various alternatives it was decided to use a normalized record structure data model"--p. 1.
