"Student loan programmes have been the target of a good deal of attention in recent years, and one important set of concerns has focussed on the levels of borrowing and the associated debt loads. Recent post-secondary students appear to have been borrowing more, paying off their debts more slowly, and defaulting in larger numbers than before. This has resulted in concerns regarding, not only the hardship faced by students in the post-schooling payback period, but also access to the post secondary system, as it is felt that individuals have been foregoing, delaying, or slowing down their studies due to the rising debt burdens, and that other decisions such as field of study, which particular institution to attend, part-time versus full-time enrolment, outside work during school, and going on to graduate school, have been affected as well"--Introduction.
