"Years of pollution by waste from sewage, pulp and paper mills, the steel and petroleum industries, and other sources have contaminated the sediment of many of the world's harbours, lakes, rivers and canals. ... In pursuit of a better technology to detoxify sediments, NWRI conducted extensive laboratory tests of different in situ methods, followed by trials in the field"--p. [1]
