“This report presents data from the Health and Activity Limitation Survey (HALS) which was a survey of persons with disabilities. It was conducted in households in the fall of 1986 and in health-related institutions in the spring of 1987. HALS was undertaken as part of Statistics Canada's ongoing commitment to build and maintain a national database on disability. The type of data gathered include the nature and severity of disability and the barriers which disabled persons encounter in all aspects of their daily activities. This publication, with the exception of Table 1, provides data collected in the household component of the survey. Estimates are provided for Canada, the provinces and the territories; total population counts are provided to enable the reader to calculate rates and percentages"--Introd., p. v.
