"The Reynolds Metals Company aluminum production plant in Massena, NY, discharges into the international section of the St. Lawrence River across from Comwall, Ontario. Under a U.S. EPA Superfund administrative order, approximately 51,500 cu yds of sediment contaminated with PCBs, PAI-Is, cyanide, flouride, aluminum, and dibenzofurans will be dredged from the river in the vicinity of the plant in 1996. The purpose of this study was to determine the toxicity of these sediments and their elutriates to freshwater organisms, identify the probable toxic agent using the TIE approach, and assess the contribution of fluoride to the observed toxicity. Fluoride was recently assessed for toxicity under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, and information on the toxicity of sediment-associated fluoride to benthic organisms was found to be incomplete"--Abstract.
