Downstream transition of river ice jams / by S. Beltaos and J. Wong. : En13-5/84-40E-PDF

"In order to deal with problems associated with river ice jams such as predicting flood levels or removing destructive jams, it is necessary that the mechanics of ice jamming be fully understood. Up to now there are no theories capable of dealing with the downstream portion of the jam where the water surface slope and jam thickness increase rapidly. In this report a method is proposed for the calculation of the jam configuration in this transition region. Although the model applies to very wide rectangular channels only, it represents a significant advance as it is the first model capable of calculating the jam configuration in the downstream toe region"--Management perspective.
