"A review of the techniques used to count phytoplankton and bacteria with particular emphasis on flow cytometry is given. It is concluded that flow cytometry is an attractive supplement to traditional microscopy but that the cost of commercial systems is too high for most laboratories. A home built system is proposed and some of the system components are enumerated"--Abstract, p. i.
