Dynamic and transport modelling of the Niagara River plume in Lake Ontario / by C.R. Murthy, T.J. Simons and D.C.L. Lam. : En13-5/85-24E-PDF
"A series of intensive measurements of the temperature and velocity structure of the Niagara River Plume in Lake Ontario were carried out in 1982 in support of toxic contaminant surveys simultaneously undertaken. ... The observational data are employed to develop simulation models of the flow and diffusion characteristics of the Niagara River Plume in Lake Ontario. ... A transport model of the plume is then developed to simulate the dispersion of contaminants, using the computed currents. Based on this model, an analysis of the contaminant fluxes through the coastal zone is carried out. It is found that between twenty to sixty percent of the total river influx will pass through the coastal zone to the open lake for a sixty-hour period. In general, the fluxes are affected by the time duration, river discharge velocities, and prevailing wind conditions"--Abstract.
