“This publication is the second edition of the Standard Geographical Classification Manual. It provides a hierarchically structured set of approximately 5000 codes, each of which designates an incorporated municipality or equivalent non-municipal census subdivision. Census divisions (counties, regional municipalities and regional districts, for example) comprise the second level of the hierarchy, and provinces and territories the third level. This edition of the Manual is being published in three volumes. Volume 1, The Classification, provides a list of codes for the geographical units (census subdivisions) which form the base of the classification; appendices showing code changes for census divisions, subdivisions, and place names since the first edition; and a set of reference maps showing all census divisions and subdivisions. Volume II, the Numerical Index lists the geographical units and the codes in the numerical order of the codes and lists the plaice names associated with the units. Volume Ill, the Alphabetical Index by Province, lists the contents of Volume II, arranged in alphabetical order by provinces and territories”--Preface, v. 1.
