"The structure of the Standard Commodity Classification and the principles used in its development are outlined in the Introduction to Volume I. The present volume contains an alphabetical index in which commodity terms and alternative designations are shown with the corresponding code numbers. This index is an aid to coding and provides a means for consistent application of the classification by different users. It is a companion to Volume II, the Classified Index, in which these same terms are arranged under the class headings of Volume I."--Introduction, p. [1].
