"During the past decade, knowledge of chemical contamination in the Arctic food chain has increased with the acquisition of new residue information. The recent finding of elevated levels of toxic chemical residues in tissues of the Polar bear, Ursus maritimus, has focused attention on the diet of northern native populations who traditionally rely upon marine and terrestrial mammals, fish, birds and plants for food. Concern surrounding the possibility of chemical exposure has been heightened by the government encouraging the consumption of'country foods' and breast-feeding of infants, rather than relying on the more expensive products from the south.
