Cope claim : background information / Office of Native Claims. : R32-366/1980E-PDF

"The Committee for Original Peoples' Entitlement was incorporated in September of 1970 and represents between 2,000 and 2,500 Inuit of the Western Arctic Region (Inuvialuit means Inuit of the Western Arctic). Because of the pressure of an impending decision regarding northern pipelines which might affect this area, COPE announced on December 14, 1976 that it wished to proceed with its own claim. Federal funding, in the form of an accountable contribution, was provided and on May 13, 1977 COPE's claim proposal was submitted to the federal government"--Background, p. 5.
