"The principal aim of this study has been to identify occupational groups with excessive mortality due to specific causes in the province of British Columbia. Although there are many well-known problems with the use of death registrations as source documents for occupational studies, we feel we have identified a number of groups with elevated risks of death, particularly cancers. These leads will need to be followed up in the next few years with more detailed studies looking at specific occupations. In the meantime, we would encourage other provincial vital registrars within Canada to code and store the information on occupation and industry that they are currently receiving on decedents through death registrations. In this way, Canadian researchers will have access to a more valuable tool for identifying workplace hazards"--Summary, p. 31.
