"As a result of laboratory studies on the photosynthetic physiology of phytoplankton (Harris and Lott, 1973) field studies were commenced early in 1972 to examine the physiological responses of Lake Ontario phytoplankton to light (Harris, 1973). It was already known by April, 1972 that under certain conditions a marked hysteresis effect was obtained when cells were exposed to rising and falling light intensities (Fig. 1)"--Introd.
