"Practically the whole of Upper Canada was surrendered to the Crown by the resident Indian people, with reserves being set apart for their use. Up to 1818 the compensation for the lands, whether in goods or money, was paid to those Indian persons concerned at the time of treaty but since that date it has taken the form of an annuity"--p. 2.
