"The first management of the Indian Department was Military in its character, the Commander of the Forces having the chief control and the Officers at the various posts acting as Superintendents or Agents. It was found necessary to appoint an Officer whose sole duties would be in connection with Indian Affairs, and on 15th April, 1755, Sir William Johnson was appointed Indian Superintendent by General Braddock under authority of His Majesty King George the Second, with the rank of Major General"--p. 1.
