520 |a"In September 1760 the British took control of New France. Article 49 of the Articles of Capitulation proposed by the Governor of New France and approved by the British Commander stated that "the Indian allies of His Most Christian Majesty, Louis XV, shall be maintained in possession of the lands which they occupy, if they wish to remain thereon; they shall not be molested under any pretext whatsoever for having taken up arms and served His Most Christian Majesty, they will have, like the French, liberty of religion, and will keep their missionaries". Notice of this was sent to the Mohawks at Kanesatake with a warning that unless they pledged allegiance to the King of England their village would be destroyed. They were also ordered to return any English prisoners-of-war"--p. 13.
