520 |a"Young children spend a considerable amount of time in the home setting - either in homes of their own or in homes of family day care providers. Most homes are poorly designed from the point of view of children's developmental needs. There is a need for improvement of housing design to meet the needs of young children. This report suggests a series of guidelines for the adaptation of the indoor and outdoor home environment to support children's play and learning activities. The guidelines are derived from two data bases: a review of literature and a survey of a sample of 25 homes. The guidelines relate to the following areas: supervision of children; establishment of activity areas; accessibility of toys and equipment; personal space for children; and child safety. In addition to general discussion of adaptations for major living areas of the home, there are specific recommendations regarding kitchens, bedrooms, and outdoor areas. The report presents two acceptable models for organizing a dwelling to accommodate children"--Abstract.
